La Cantina

For decades, this beautiful cellar was buried under rubbish and completely cut off from view.

Then a couple of builders stumbled across it quite by accident and Pitigliano‘s historical society decided to restore it to its former splendour.

The barrels that fill much of the cellar’s main room were originally housed in other smaller cellar’s around the ghetto.

They were moved here after restoration works were completed so we can get a better idea of what the room would have looked like the 16th century.

The barrels once held Kosher wine and are made from wood sourced in the forests around Pitigliano.
