Piazza al Mare

The piazza that connects Follonica to the sea.

At the heart of this piazza is ‘Il Portale del Mistero’ (above), a white marble statue by Riccardo Grazzi that depicts a symbolic door opening towards the sea.

As far as modern art goes, this one is neither simply ornamental or garishly out of place. Instead it perfectly sums up Follonica in my opinion.

The city is literally at the feet of the sea and I guess it does have a sort of mystical and mysterious vibe as a consequence of that.

But even if you don’t follow my random attempts at being profound, the piazza is still the best place to admire Follonica behind you and the sea in front of you.

It’s also where all the best gelato stores are, and no one makes gelato like Follonica’s locals!
